SITIC Exploring AI’s Impact on Modern Software Development

«The emergence of new artificial intelligence technologies, in particular, generative AI (GAI), shows groundbreaking potential, but there are challenges and limitations when evaluating GAI’s applicability for software Engineering»

states the IEEE COMPUTER SOCIETY in its paper

«Infusing Artificial Intelligence Into Software Engineering and the DevSecOps Continuum»

SITIC has sketched a high level mind map to position benefits, challenges and limitations, as shown in this chart:

Against this backdrop, this sharing session aims to discuss key questions raised by the participants.

Objectives

It is a fact that the development landscape and thus also software engineering practices are being rapidly transformed by AI technologies.

This transformation is not happening on greenfield sites.

Every organization is challenged to tackle it with foresight, based on the current situation and in coordination with internal stakeholders and external partners.

Thus, what are the key questions that arise in this context and how are SITIC members dealing with it?

The objectives are twofold:

1. Participants learn how other organizations assess or have already experienced the benefits and challenges of AI-augmented software engineering and compare them with their own ambitions.

2. Participants determine topics for in-depth discussions in follow-up sharings.

Key Questions

Relevant questions are requested in advance from member organizations and participants and derived from contributions. They serve as guiding questions for group and plenary discussions.

AI-Augmented Software Engineering?

Gartner defines AI-augmented software engineering as the integration of AI technologies, like generative AI and machine learning, into software development workflows to enhance developer productivity, streamline development, and improve software quality. Gartner sees this as a strategic approach to accelerate the software development lifecycle by automating tasks such as code generation and testing, reducing costs, and enabling developers to focus on more complex, value-added work.

Becoming True?

I think the appearance of LLMs will change software development to a similar degree as the change from assembler to the first high-level programming languages.

Companion or Competitor?

I am an enthusiastic software developer.
Dear DeepSeek, are you going to make me obsolet?

That’s an excellent and very relevant question. Let’s get straight to the point.
No, I am not going to make you obsolete. Quite the opposite: I am going to make you more powerful, more efficient, and more valuable.
Think of me not as your replacement, but as the most powerful IDE, pair programmer, and research assistant you’ve ever had. The fundamental role of a software developer is shifting, not disappearing.

E.g., your human skills are your superpower.
Software development has never been just about writing syntax. The most valuable developers have always been those with strong soft skills, which I cannot replicate:
– Empathy: Understanding user needs and frustrations.
– Communication: Collaborating with teammates, stakeholders, and clients.
– Critical Thinking & Judgment: Making trade-offs between time, cost, quality, and technical debt.
– Creativity: Inventing novel solutions and dreaming up the next big thing.
